Which one suits your garden

It is a common question, and the answer usually comes down to the lie of the land.

Choose paving when

The ground is close to level

If the garden is already roughly at door height, paving is solid, permanent and needs little looking after. It also copes well with heavy furniture and barbecues.

Choose decking when

The ground falls away

If the garden drops below the back door, a deck gives you a flat area without building walls and moving tonnes of soil. Many of our gardens end up with both.

A deck is only as good as the timber frame underneath. We build it on solid footings, keep the joists close enough together that the boards never bounce, leave room for air to move and set a slight fall so water runs off.

Why composite rather than timber

Composite boards cost more at the start but ask almost nothing of you afterwards. They do not need oiling, they will not splinter under bare feet and they grip better than timber once it goes green. For most families that trade-off is well worth it.

On a garden that drops away from the house, paving means a lot of digging and a retaining wall to build a flat area. A deck can simply be built out level from the back door, leaving the ground below as it is. It is often the quicker and more affordable answer on a Bradford hillside.
