Common questions
Can you give me a rough price over the phone?
A ballpark, sometimes, if you can describe it well. A proper figure, no. On a hillside plot in Queensbury the digging and the retaining can cost more than the paving itself, and on a flat plot in Heaton it barely registers. We would rather come and look than quote you something we then have to walk back.
We have a stone-built terrace with a tiny flagged yard. Is that worth doing?
Very much so. Small yards behind Bradford terraces are some of the most satisfying jobs going, because a bit of thought about levels, drainage and one good material transforms how the back of the house feels. Access is usually through the house or a ginnel, and we price for that honestly.
What sits best against Bradford stone houses?
Natural sandstone in buff and grey tones picks up the colour of the gritstone walls rather than fighting it. Porcelain works too, but go for the warmer, textured ranges rather than a bright white, which can look stark against sooty stone.
Our garden is on a steep slope. Where do we even start?
With the levels. Half of Bradford is built on a hillside, and the answer is almost always to terrace: a paved area off the house, retained properly, then steps down to a lawn or a deck. We plan the heights first and choose materials second.
Is resin or block paving better for a drive?
Resin is seamless, tidy and lets water drain through, which counts on Bradford’s wet days. Block paving is easier to lift and relay if a pipe or cable ever needs getting at, and suits borders and patterns. Both depend completely on the base underneath.
Will artificial grass cope with the rain up here?
If it is laid on the right base, yes. The water goes straight through the backing into a free-draining layer of stone underneath. Where it fails is when it is rolled out on soil, which holds water and leaves the surface squelching.
Do you build decking on sloping ground?
Yes, and a slope is often exactly where decking makes the most sense. A framed deck can sit level with the back door while the ground drops away beneath it, which saves a lot of excavation and retaining work.
Do you take everything away at the end?
Yes. Old slabs, soil, turf and rubble are removed as part of the job and the cost is written on the quote, so there is no surprise skip charge at the end.
How long before you could start?
It depends on the time of year and the size of the job. Ring and we will tell you honestly where the diary is rather than promising a date we cannot keep.
